Children Who Witness Abuse Counselling Program


An intervention program for children/youth ages 5-18 who have witnessed/experienced emotional, mental or physical abuse in their home.


The Program Offers:


- Individual counselling.

- Group sessions (age specific).

- Support for parents/caregivers.

- Community education.


What is an Intervention Program?


The goal of the program is to stop the intergenerational cycle of abuse by:

- Encouraging the expression of feelings, thought and experiences.

- Teaching children healthy and safe ways to express their anger.

- Teaching age appropriate problem solving and communication skills.


Through individual, or group sessions, children/youth are provided with a safe environment to learn and talk about:


- Families

- Separation and Loss

- Abuse

- Safety Planning

- Anger

- Self Esteem

Children will understand that they are not alone and are not at fault.


What are the effects of family conflict on children?


- Blaming of self

- Loss of self confidence

- Agressive behaviour

- Depression

- Fears and anxiety

- Anger, distrust

- Poor peer relations

- Poor school performance

- Inappropriate attitudes about violence.
